Survivability Lecture by Rob Fleming @ Thomas Jefferson University

I am excited to be a part of the 2026 Fall Lecture Series at the College of Architecture, Design, and Engineering! I will be talking about Design for Survivability. Learn more about the new book and about how hope is making a comeback by visiting survivability.org.

More about the lecture…

The Earth is getting hotter. In 2026, global warming accelerated beyond 2°C for the first time, bringing more heat waves, droughts, storms, and floods. As the impacts of global heating intensify, humanity is coming to a staggering realization:

Maybe we can’t save the planet…

Fear not! Throughout history, humanity has adapted to extraordinary challenges: from ice ages to global pandemics to world wars to extreme environments. So, despite all the climate gloom and doom, one thing is sure: We already know how to survive:

We will save ourselves…

The question is how. Enter Survivability, a new revolutionary approach to solving the climate crisis. Grounded in science and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Survivability features a comprehensive and holistic set of design strategies organized by three easy-to-remember, color-coded steps:

Step 1: GREEN DESIGN
Double down on well-established sustainable design strategies to limit future warming to 4°C by 2075.

Step 2: RED DESIGN
Pursue life-saving, climate-adaptive design strategies to give humanity a fighting chance to survive the climate catastrophe.

Step 3: BLUE DESIGN
Apply life-enhancing regenerative design practices to reconnect humans to nature and achieve an abundant, thriving, and inspiring future.
