I am an educator, author, keynote speaker, sustainability advocate, and architect. 35 years ago, I was living the good life – designing buildings, teaching design studio on the side, and traveling the world to see the great works of architecture. It was the perfect script: I was going to be a famous architect. All was well, until I was introduced to the concept of sustainability by a well-meaning professor in grad school. I knew instantly that this was for me. I never looked back. As soon as I graduated with a master’s degree in architecture, I started teaching sustainability full time at a university in Philadelphia.

I knew I was on the right career track because everyone told me I was crazy. They said that sustainability was a “ridiculous concept” or that I was “ruining my career”, or dozens of other reasons to not go in this direction. Today, I still use negative, doubtful comments, as a gauge for high quality innovative ideas. If people pat me on the back and say “very nice” I know I have not pushed an idea far enough.

In 2022, I had a nagging feeling that something new was brewing. Except this time, it was a very dark and threatening realization: I started to know that we were not going to win the battle against climate change. From that moment on, my mission in life changed.

Today, I am the self-proclaimed founder of the Survivability movement. If you are upset by the concept of survivability, good. I know I am on the right track. I immediately began writing the Survivability book. This is my first creative non-fiction book and it has been a blast. Sure, the topic is absolutely brutal! To soften the blow, I wrote the book like a formulaic Hallmark Movie. Humans meet Earth and fall in love. Humans and Earth have a misunderstanding and get mad at each other. Humans and Earth patch things up, and everyone lives happily ever after. Check out the rest of this web site to learn more about the book.
